Surprised by joy—impatient as the Wind
I turned to share the transport—Oh! with whom
But Thee，deep buried in the silent tomb，
That spot which no vicissitude can find?
Love，faithful love，recalled thee to my mind—
But how could I forget thee? Through what power，
Even for the least division of an hour，
Have I been so beguiled as to be blind
To my most grievous loss! —That thought’s return
Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore，
Save one，one only，when I stood forlorn，
Knowing my heart’s best treasure was no more；
That neither present time，nor years unborn
Could to my sight that heavenly face restore.

➀为作者夭折的女儿凯瑟琳而作。凯瑟琳生于1808年9月，死于1812年6月。

每次遇到惊喜，我就急得如风，
转身就想找到你分享这欢畅，
可你啊却深深埋进了死寂的坟墓，
九泉下再也看不到尘世的沧桑。
爱，深深的爱叫我把你想起——
可我怎能把你忘记？又有什么力量，
哪怕是只在短短的一瞬间里，
能把我的双眼蒙蔽，叫我遗忘
我最悲痛的损失？这哀思浮起，
把我久已的悲伤推入痛苦的深巷，
除此，除此之外，我孤身一人，
我知道心肝宝贝已殒玉消香，

It is a beauteous evening，calm and free
The holy time is quiet as a Nun
Breathless with adoration；the broad sun
Is sinking down in its tranquility；
The gentleness of heaven broods o’er the Sea；
Listen! the mighty Being is awake➀，
And doth with his eternal motion make
A sound like thunder—everlastingly.
Dear Child! dear Girl! that walkest with me here，
If thou appear untouched by solemn thought，
Thy nature is not therefore less divine:
Thou liest in Abraham’s bosom all the year➁；
And worshipp’st at the Temple’s inner shrine，
God being with thee when we know it not.

➀ the mighty Being 和下行的his 都指the Sea。
➁亚伯拉罕，《旧约•创世纪》中所说的犹太人的始祖。“亚伯拉罕的胸怀”，意为天国或“极乐世界”，典出《新约•路加福音》第16章。这行诗是说那个女孩终年与大自然脉息相通。下面两行进一步指出：亲近大自然也就是亲近了上帝。

多美的黄昏啊，沉静，闲适，
这神圣的时光宛如安详的修女，
因静穆而屏息；一轮红日，
在缓缓而又默默地西沉而去；
这轻曼温柔的天空抚慰着大海，
听啊，这浩瀚已醒，他有生命之力，
他又掀起了无穷无尽的澎湃，
发出轰鸣的雷声——万古不息。
亲爱的小姑娘，你跟着我来到这儿，
即使你没有感受到这庄严的思绪➁，
你的天性也不会因此缺乏神性，
因你终年躺在亚伯拉罕的怀里，
虔诚崇拜圣殿内的神龛，
无论我们知否，上帝与你在一起。

➀此诗写于1802年法国加来。诗人写他与九岁的女儿卡洛琳黄昏漫步海滩的情景，诗人表达若其女儿未被这美景感动，那是因她太小，她本身就在自然之中。
➁庄严的思绪：可参阅《廷腾寺》一诗，诗人面对自然油然而生的肃穆的思想。

The world is too much with us；late and soon，
Getting and spending，we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours；
We have given our hearts away，a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon；
The winds that will be howling at all hours，
And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers；
For this，for everything，we are out of tune；
It moves us not. —Great God! I’d rather be
A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn➀；
So might I，standing on this pleasant lea，
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn；
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea；
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn➁.

➀下文的两个海神都出于希腊神话。希腊神话带有明显的多神教色彩，与属于一神教的基督教教义诸多牴牾，因此被视为异教。
➁普罗谛乌斯，变化多端的海神，原形为老人。特里同，半人半鱼的海神，他的螺号既能使海涛汹涌，也能使海面平静。在以上两行中，华兹华斯化用了斯宾塞和弥尔顿的诗句。

尘世让人欲壑难填，我们
忙于赚钱，用于挥霍，操劳一生，
对养育我们的自然漠不关心；
为追名逐利，我们送掉了心灵！
大海，她向明月袒露着胸怀；
狂风，无息无止地嘶鸣，
这会儿宛若入睡的花朵悄然沉寂；
可是我们与这一切都不再相融，
上帝啊，我们怎么竟然麻木不仁？
我宁愿做异教徒，做陈腐教义的乳婴，
这样，我站在这片宜人的草地上，
就会一眼看到那抚慰我孤独的情景；
会看到变幻海神从海面浮出，
会听到老人鱼海神吹响的螺声。

诗人的自然主义思想，深受卢梭回归自然的思想的影响。回归自然的思想，就是在批判当时的资本主义对物质的贪求及对自然的破坏。

Scorn not the Sonnet；Critic，you have frowned，
Mindless of its just honours；with this key
Shakespeare unlocked his heart；the melody➀
Of this small lute gave ease to Petrarch’s wound➁；
A thousand times this pipe did Tasso sound➂；
With it Camoens soothed an exile’s grief➃；
The Sonnet glittered a gay myrtle leaf
Amid the cypress with which Dante crowned➄
His visionary brow: a glow-worm lamp➅，
It cheered mild Spenser，called from Faery-land
To struggle through dark ways；and when a damp➆
Fell round the path of Milton，in his hand
The Thing became a trumpet；whence he blew
Soul-animating strains—alas，too few➇!

➀莎士比亚写过十四行诗154首。
➁彼特拉克（1304—1374），意大利诗人。写过十四行诗三百多首，歌咏他对少女萝拉的爱情。“创痛”指爱情上的失意。
➂塔索（1544—1595），意大利诗人，写过十四行诗多首。
➃卡蒙斯（1524？—1580），葡萄牙诗人，写过十四行诗多首。他曾长期被放逐，浪迹于摩洛哥、印度等地。“逐客的离情”指此。
➄但丁为贝雅特里齐而写的抒情诗集《新生》中包括十四行诗多首。头上缠着柏枝，是表示对贝雅特里齐的悼念（欧洲人常以柏枝表示悼念）。
➅斯宾塞（1552—1599），英国诗人。他的十四行诗押韵形式独具一格，称为“斯宾塞体”。他以长诗《仙后》闻名于世，所以下行提到“仙乡”。
➆约翰•弥尔顿（1608—1674），卓越的英国革命诗人和政治家。
➇弥尔顿扩大了十四行诗的题材和视野，但他总共只写了23首十四行诗（18首用英文，5首用意大利文），所以华兹华斯认为他写得还“太少”。

别小觑十四行诗，批评家，
你颦眉蹙额，轻视它应有的荣光；
它是一把钥匙，打开莎士比亚的心扉；
它是一只琴，舒缓彼特拉克的惆怅；
它是一把长笛，塔索吹了千万遍；
伴它，卡蒙斯抚慰流放的悲伤；
它宛如一片长青叶，闪烁着欢乐，
辉映但丁戴着的松枝，那有他的梦想；
它像只萤火虫，令性情恬淡的
斯宾塞激动不已，他毅然告别仙乡，
勇敢踏上与黑暗作斗的征途；
它是只号角，弥尔顿迷失于路上，
他就会吹响手中的号角——吹响激励
心灵的旋律，但惜未能经久飘扬！
