我向他们讨一首诗

把诗托起至光线

像彩色幻灯片

或按一只耳朵挨着诗的蜂窝。

我说拖下鼠标到一首诗

看他探索自己的出路，

或走进诗的房屋

感觉下墙上的电灯开关。

我要他们去滑水

在一首诗表面

向作者挥手站在沿岸。

但他们所要做的一切

是把他捆在椅子上用绳

施酷刑让他招供。

他们开始敲打着诗用软管

去发觉它真正的内含。

Introduction to Poetry

Billy Collins

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem's room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to water ski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

作者简介：

比利-柯林斯 1941年3月22日出生在威廉-詹姆斯-柯林斯家里，美国诗人，从2001年至2003年荣获美国桂冠诗人。纽约市立大学莱曼学院的特聘教授，佛罗里达州冬季公园研究所特聘高级研究员。1992年柯林斯被公认为纽约公共图书馆文学雄狮，被选为2004-2006年度的纽约州诗人。
